You asked for it and we're delivering it! The area's largest swimming program is now offering swim lessons for ages 4 and up.

We believe great swimmers are built on great fundamentals. Our program develops water safety, confidence, and proper technique to create a foundation for lifelong swimming success. All classes are a group setting with 4-6 students in each class, depending on age and skill level.

Class Descriptions

Level 1 - Swim Foundations

This is our introduction to water safety skills - swimmers will develop comfort and confidence in the water and practice foundational swimming skills including floating, kicking and rhythmic breathing. This program is designed to teach critical water safety skills and establish a foundation for good technique for future swim training.

Level 2 - Swim Essentials

This class is for swimmers who have successfully demonstrated all Foundations skills and are ready to develop essential swimming skills. This level focuses on proper kicking technique, beginning freestyle, beginning backstroke and teaches essential skills including alternating breathing, and beginning dive progression. These skills equip swimmers for a lifetime of fitness and recreational swimming and establish good technique that will bridge into future competitive swimming.

Level 3 - SwimHurricanes Strokes

This class is designed for swimmers who are comfortable in beginning backstroke and freestyle, and are ready to refine their technique. Swimmers focus on proper body position, breathing, timing, and stroke mechanics in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly while building endurance through structured drills and beginner training sets. This class helps bridge the gap between learn-to-swim lessons and competitive swimming.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know what level my student is?

Children with little to no water experience will start in our Levle 1 - Swim Foundations class.

Students may register for Level 2 - Swim Essentials, if they can independely perform ALL of the following in-water skills:

    • Submerge face and ears in the water
    • Float on their back without assistance
    • Float on their tummy without assistance
    • Kick while floating on their back to move across the water without assistance
    • Kick while floating on their back to move across the water without assistance
    • Jump from the side of the pool and kick to the surface
    • Push up on the side of the pool and climb out without the use of a ladder or stairs.

If your student does not meet ALL of those skills yet, we recommend beginning in Level 1 and will work with your student to polish off those skills.  As they progress, our instructor will recommend moving to the Lelvel 2 class. Students will progress at different speeds based on their age, enthusiasm for water instruction, attendance, ability to practice and personal motor skill development.

Level 3- SwimHurricane Strokes requires a placement from an instructor, usually during a Level 2- Swim Essentials Evaluation or Tiger Sharks Evaluation. New students who wish to register for this class should email Learntoswim@swimhurricanes.com to request an evaluation.

If your have unsure about your student's placement, please complete the skill questions during your registration or reach out to us at learntoswim@swimhurricanes.com.

  • How many students are in each class?

Our Learn to Swim Level 1 and 2 classes are capped at 4 students per instructor to ensure each student gets plenty of time and practice with our instructors. Level 3 classes may have up to six students depending on their age.

  • What do I need for swim lessons?

Children will need a one piece swimming suit that will stay in place during lessons and a towel. Googles and swim caps are recommended for all classes. Level 1- Swim Foundations students do not always utilize goggles during their first classes but will incorprate them into future practice.

The pool is indoors, so sun shirts/tshirts  are not needed and can impede their mobility and buoyancy.

  • Am I able to watch lessons?

Yes!  We have limited space available on deck, but there is a room with a large window to the pool area for those waiting on their swimmers.  We do ask that parents stay on site during lessons.  Only students and instructors are permitted in the pool.  While we know that it's fun to take photos and videos of the lessons, we do ask parents to be mindful of the other students and instructors that may be in your video.

  • Are locker rooms available?

Locker rooms are not available, but there are multiple private changing rooms for parents/children on the pool deck. Restrooms are also available.

  • Do you offer private lessons or lessons for students younger than 4 years old?

Private Lessons are available through Chatahooche Swim Academy and their instructors.  For details, visit their website at https://www.columbusswimandscuba.com/

In some cases, we will accept students at 3 years old.  For details and pricing, please email us at learntoswim@swimhurricanes.com

  • If my child has some swim experience, should I do Learn to Swim or Tiger Sharks?

This choice will depend on the student and family, and you can certainly do both! Our swim lessons are designed to provide a smaller class size, with more focused instruction for each student. It's a great environment for students who are nervous about water experiences,  need a little extra support, want more individualized instruction, or just aren't ready to commit to Tiger Sharks schedule.

Once your child is able to jump into the water, kick to the surface and swim to the wall and swim approximately 10 yards independently, they would be eligible to join our summer introductory swim team - Tiger Sharks.  Tiger Shark swimmers continue to build confidence and strength in the water, but also work on body position, the four competitive strokes, and swim meet skills.  It's a lot of fun and we encourage you to try it!

For more advanced swim lesson students, who are able to swim 25yards in a front crawl and backstroke, they are eligible to join our year-round competition team, the Hurricanes.

  • How fast will my child progress through the levels?

Each child is unique and will progress at their own pace through each skill. We have designed our curriculum to foster growth opportunities and more challenging skills within each level, before advancing students to a new level.

Because we are passionate about developing strong water safety skills and good technique, we hold a high standard for mastering a skill before advancing a student - students are expected to not just successfully complete a skill once but demonstrate the ability to

consistently and confidently execute the skill.

Consistent practice and enthusiasm for water experiences will help aid their progression.

  • What is the refund or cancellation policy?

Due to the limited nature of the Learn to Swim slots, we are unable to offer refunds or make up classes after registration.

Families may cancel their next month of lessons in their parent account with ten notice. We are unable to save spaces in classes for students who discontinue lessons, but they are welcome to return when ready by rejoining the wait list.

  • Are make-up classes offered if my child misses class?

Because our instructors and pool time is reserved for our specific lesson dates, we are unable to offer make up classes for days your child misses class.  Monthly fees are pro-rated for times when a class falls on a holiday.

We will do our best to shift classes when circumstances beyond our control result in the pool not being available to  students.  Those situations will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

  • Can my child join the swim team?

We sure hope so! Our goal is to help children develop skills in the water that will improve their safety, fitness and overall enjoyment of the water!  Once they are ready for the Hurricanes team, your instructor will recommend them for a Hurricanes practice group placement.
