Year Round USA Swimming Practice Groups

Our competitive swimming program runs year-round (August - July) for swimmers between the ages of 5 and 18.

Swimmers are assigned to a practice group by their coaches during their initial evaluation and move up based on the team's Athlete Progression Model.

Category 1

The focus of this group is on learning rhythmic breathing for freestyle, kick and streamline development, basic freestyle and backstroke drills, and the introduction of dives/starts in a fun environment that fosters teamwork and acquiring new skills. Category 1 swimmers are eligible to compete in mini-meets during the year and our home meets.

Category 2

The focus of this group is consistent kicking, introduction to breaststroke and butterfly, body balance and awareness in the water, refine starts and turns, learning to read a pace clock and introduction to race strategy. Category 2 swimmers are eligible to compete in mini-meets during the year and our home meets.

Category 3

The focus of this group is refining technique for all 4 competitive strokes, consistent kicking to include development of underwater kicks, refining starts and turns, and learning proper lane etiquette. The Category 3 group is encouraged to maximize practice attendance and meets to prepare for higher levels of competition.

Category 4

The focus of this is strong kicking with an emphasis on underwater kicks, learning more advanced drills for each stroke, ability to read pace clock for longer training sets, and strong emphasis on race strategy. This group is encouraged to maintain high attendance standards for practices and meets.

Category 5

Category 5 swimmers committed to honing their technical skills while also increasing their endurance with more intense training. This group focuses on the details, especially turns and underwater; specific race strategies and intentional goal setting. This group is expected to maintain high attendance standards for practices and meets.

Category 5 - Advanced

Designed for athletes age 13+ with a strong commitment to the sport, and a desire to swim at higher levels, this group focuses on excellent kicking, especially turns & underwaters; consistent training to specific race strategies; goal setting; self-commitment to becoming a better athlete; and bringing an attitude of eagerness to excel to new levels in training and racing. Swimmers are invited to this group based on strong commitment to the sport, and successfully meeting and maintaining coach-defined performance, practice and meet attendance standards. These are afforded the opportunity to compete at the highest levels possible.

Member Fees

  • ANNUAL REGISTRATION FEE:

    Annual Registration Fee: $85

    This is an annualfee of $85, which includes one (1) silicone team cap, one (1) team t-shirt, one (1) team bag tag,  annual banquet fee and an administration fee. Team Annual Registrations are valid Aug 1 to July 31.  Registration fees are reduced after April 1st.

  • USA SWIMMING MEMBERSHIP (REQUIRED):

    USA SWIMMING MEMBERSHIP:  $89 

    This will be automatially processed by the team and billed to member account on Sept 1. For those joining later in the season, this fee will be paid during your inital registration and we will process your USA Swimming membership within 30 days. USA Swimming fees are reduced after April 1st.

  • MEMBER DUES:

    All Hurricane Team Members pay dues on a monthly basis. Members may also choose to prepay their annual dues at a discounted rate. All payments are handled through your online member account.

    2025-2026  Annual  Pre-Paid Dues Discount ( Full year members who pay their dues before Sept 1st recieve a discounted rate. To take advange, register before Aug 11th and select the Annual Pre-Paid Dues option.)

  • MEET FEES:

     Swimmers are responsible for meet fees for all meets they attend and should read the meet invitation for details. Meet fees are applied to each member account immediately after the commitment deadline and billed  on the 1st of the month via AutoPay.  Meet fees typically consist of an entry surcharge ($3-$6 usually, though championship level events may be higher) and a per event fee (sometimes called a "splash fee," and can range from $4-$20 per event.)  These fees are billed to swimmer accounts immediately after the entry deadline.  Away meets (at locations other than the Columbus Aquatic Club) will include a $25 Coaching Fee to assist in covering the cost of coach travel. State level meets and higher will incur a $35 Coaching Fee.

  • TRAVEL MEET:

    Occasionally, the team will offer the opportunity to travel as a club to a meet. Swimmers 11 years and older are eligible to travel on the team bus and stay in the hotel, chaperoned by the team coaches. The annual travel meet, slated for early June 2026, is a season highlight for the athletes and a great opportunity for team bonding.  Costs for this trip are based on the number of attendees, but are typically between $350-$450 per athlete, which includes transportation, hotels, and meals. Details for the travel meet are distributed to families several months in advance to allow for planning and budgeting.

  • FAMILY DISCOUNTS:

    We believe that swimming is a great family sport!  Families with 2 active swimmers recieve 10% off their monthly dues, 3 swimmers are 25% off and 4 or more swimmers are 40% off.  Learn to Swim, Tiger Sharks or Masters are not eligible - Please see each program's info for family discount information.
